PWSID: DEP Investigates Source of Elevated Total Dissolved Solids in Monongahela River Issue Date: 10-23-2008

DEP Investigates Source of Elevated Total Dissolved Solids in Monongahela River

Attention Pennsylvania American Water customers living in southern Allegheny, Washington and Fayette Counties (Excludes Connellsville Customers)

The Monongahela River is Pennsylvania American Water's primary source of supply for your drinking water. Currently, the river is experiencing increased levels of total dissolved solids (TDS), which are the total amount of all inorganic and organic substances.

This condition does not constitute a significant health threat. Customers might notice hard water, which can lead to scale build-up in pipes, reduced efficiency of water filters, hot water heaters, etc., and aesthetic problems, such as a bitter or salty taste. Pennsylvania American Water cannot treat for hardness or high conductivity and dissolved solids.

Although elevated TDS levels are not considered a major human health risk, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is recommending as a precaution that consumers use bottled water for drinking and preparing food until the exceedance is eliminated.

This condition is temporary and will exist until the region receives significant rainfall. Pennsylvania American Water is dedicated to providing you with the highest quality water service, and we are working with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to monitor this condition and the quality of your water.

For more information, view our Q and A on Total Dissolved Solids or the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's announcement regarding this condition. Customers can also contact our customer service center with any additional questions at 1.800.565.7292. This alert will be updated as additional information becomes available, so we urge you to check back for updates.
